The National Automated Clearinghouse Association (NACHA) is implementing rules to move payments faster than ever before. Effective September 15, 2017, ACH debit transactions could be debited (withdrawn) on the same day they are initiated by the account holder.
What You Need to Know:
- When merchants and billing companies offer you the option to make a same-day electronic payment, the funds might be debited from your account as soon as that very same day. If you do not want the payment to be debited from your account on the same day do not choose the same day option with the merchant.
- If you approve a same-day payment you should have the funds available in your account that same day. If the funds are not available, either your payment will not complete or it may complete but you may incur non-sufficient (NSF) or overdraft transfer fees.
- For any pre-authorized electronic payments you may have, such as a recurring mortgage or insurance payment, there should be little to no change to the time these payments are posted to your account.
- With payments moving faster it is a good practice to check your account balance frequently, at the end of each business day.
